Parents Community Outreach

Community Outreach

Our Outreach programs are our way of giving back to the community we care so much about. We also encourage our students to participate in these activities as a way of fostering volunteerism and awareness among our kids. A few of the projects we sponsor are the Warm Clothing Drive and Martha's Table. Look for these programs and more during the school year.

Warm Clothing Drive

The annual PTA Warm Clothing Drive happens in the fall. This is a wonderful opportunity for Wood Acres families to help other children stay warm for the coming winter. The PTA will collect winter clothing to donate to families at our sister schools, New Hampshire Estates and Oak View Elementary School. Click here for more details and what items are needed . Volunteers are needed to help with collecting, sorting, and delivery. If you are interested in helping, please contact Pam Holden at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Martha's Table Sandwich and Non-perishable Food Collection

Please find additional information in the Wednesday Packet explaining the details of this community service project. It is an ongoing project that happens 7 times during the year.  Helping to feed the hungry is a great way to help teach our children how to give to others.  Thank you in advance, and we look forward to a great year. If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Hallie Werbel at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . The dates for collection are now on Tuesdays: March 9, April 13, and May 11.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

The Wood Acres Food Drive happens yearly before Thanksgiving and will benefit Bread for the City, a non-profit agency in Washington, D.C. that provides food, clothing, medicalcare, legal and social services to people in need. Bread for the City operates Washington's largest food pantry, providing food to 5,000 households each month.

While the three main items requested are cranberry sauce, canned yams  and low-sodium stuffing mix -any non-perishable foods are welcome. Think healthy: foods low in fat, cholesterol and sodium. The hope is that by not limiting certain items to certain grades, it will be easier for  families to be generous with their giving.

Used Book Drive

The Used Book Drive takes place at Wood Acres every year to collect used children's books (and parenting or cooking books for adults) to benefit our sister schools in Silver Spring, New Hampshire Estates (K-2) and Oakview (3-5). Books are collected by parent volunteers before school starts at the main door and the kiss and go door.

How you can help: Start sorting through any used books that your family has outgrown! If you (and your child if you wish) are able to help collect/sort the books the week of the drive, please contact Maud Iturregui at 301-320-7235 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
